The heart of wine country

Pokolbin

Most Hunter weddings happen here. Pokolbin is a few square kilometres of vineyards, cellar doors and restaurants along Broke, McDonalds and Hermitage Roads, so guests can stay a short drive from the venue and spend the weekend tasting. Expect rows of vines, big sky and the Brokenback Range on the horizon.

It is also the busiest part of the valley. Book accommodation early for spring and autumn Saturdays, and check concert dates before you lock in your date.

Resorts, chapels and quieter lanes

Lovedale, Rothbury & Belford

North-east of Pokolbin, Lovedale and Rothbury are a little quieter, with more space between properties. This is where you find the big all-in-one resorts with rooms for most of your guests, plus Lovedale's two chapels and barn venues on wide lawns.

Belford and Dalwood sit further north towards Branxton, closer to the Hunter Expressway, which makes the drive from Sydney or Newcastle a little shorter.

Mountains, sandstone and space

Broke & Wollombi

Drive 25 minutes west of Pokolbin and the valley opens up. Broke sits under Yellow Rock and the Brokenback Range, with smaller wineries and big private properties. Wollombi is further south, a historic village in a green valley with bush all around.

The scenery here is some of the most dramatic in the Hunter, and many venues have accommodation on site for a weekend wedding. Plan the drive: guests staying in Pokolbin will need transport there and back.

Heritage homesteads by the river

Paterson & the Lower Hunter

Between Maitland and Paterson, the Hunter turns from vineyards to farmland and river flats. The venues here are historic homesteads, country chapels and estates with room to spread out, and they are a short drive from Newcastle.

It suits couples who want a country wedding without the wine-country crowds, and it often has more Saturday availability in peak season.

When to marry

March to May

Autumn

Our favourite season, and the busiest. The vines turn gold and red from April, days are warm and evenings are mild enough to stay outside. Book early: autumn Saturdays go first.

Sunset about 7.30pm in early March, 5.15pm by late May

June to August

Winter

Crisp mornings, frost on the vines, fog in the valley and fires inside. Venues are often cheaper and dates easier to get. Golden hour comes before 5pm, so plan an earlier ceremony and choose a venue with a warm indoor space.

Sunset about 5pm

September to November

Spring

Fresh green vines, blossom and longer evenings once daylight saving starts in October. Spring is nearly as popular as autumn. Wind can pick up in September, so keep a sheltered spot for the ceremony.

Sunset about 5.50pm in September, 7.40pm by late November

December to February

Summer

Long, hot days and late sunsets, with afternoon storms that usually pass quickly. Harvest runs through summer, so wineries are busy. Choose a shady ceremony spot and a reception room with air conditioning, and keep the dance floor going until late.

Sunset about 8pm

Light and timing

The best portrait light in the Hunter is the last hour before sunset, when it comes in low and warm across the vines. We build your day around it.

On estates close to the Brokenback Range, the sun drops behind the hills before the official sunset, so golden light can finish 20 to 30 minutes early. We check each venue's horizon when we plan your timeline.

As a guide, start your ceremony about three hours before sunset. That leaves time for the ceremony, family photos and canapés, then 20 minutes with us for portraits while the light is at its best. In June that means a ceremony around 2pm. In December it can be 5pm.

Getting there and getting around

By car: Pokolbin is about two hours from Sydney on the M1 and Hunter Expressway, 45 minutes from Newcastle and about an hour from Newcastle Airport at Williamtown.

By train: there is no station in wine country. The nearest are Branxton and Maitland, then a taxi or transfer.

On the day: book a shuttle or coach for your guests. Rideshare and taxis are few in the valley, especially late at night, and nobody should be driving the back roads after a day of wine. Most venues can recommend transport companies they work with.

Where your guests stay

Pokolbin and Lovedale have resorts, boutique hotels and hundreds of holiday cottages, and many venues have rooms on site for you and your bridal party. Cessnock, Branxton and Maitland have more motels and are a 15 to 30 minute drive away.

Weekend stays in peak season often have a two-night minimum, and big concerts at the wineries can book out the valley. Send your guests accommodation details with your save-the-dates.

If it rains

Hunter storms are often short, and some of our favourite photos have been taken under umbrellas between showers. Ask your venue where the wet-weather ceremony goes before you book. Barrel rooms, chapels and wide verandahs all photograph beautifully, and an overcast sky gives soft, even light for portraits.

Hunter Valley wedding FAQs

How far is the Hunter Valley from Sydney?

Pokolbin is about two hours' drive from Sydney, 45 minutes from Newcastle and about an hour from Newcastle Airport.

What is the best month for a Hunter Valley wedding?

April and May for autumn colour and mild evenings, and October and November for spring. They are the most popular months, so book early. Winter is quieter and often cheaper, with beautiful soft light.

Which Hunter Valley venues have accommodation on site?

The resorts (Château Élan, Rydges, Oaks Cypress Lakes, voco Kirkton Park and Mercure) have rooms for most of your guests. Many smaller estates, including La Vigna, Greystone Estate, Marlu Station and The Woods at Pokolbin, sleep the wedding party. Always confirm current numbers with the venue.

What time should our ceremony start?

About three hours before sunset gives you the ceremony, family photos, canapés and golden-hour portraits without rushing. That means around 2pm in winter and 4.30 to 5pm in summer. We help every couple plan their timeline.

How much does a Hunter Valley wedding photographer cost?

Our wedding photography starts at $1,999, and photo + film collections start at $4,999. See our Hunter Valley wedding photography page for packages.

Do we need transport for our guests?

Yes, we recommend it. Rideshare and taxis are limited in the valley, especially late at night. A shuttle or coach between the accommodation and the venue keeps everyone safe and on time.

Venue details checked October 2026. Always confirm with the venue.
