Newcastle is home turf for us: ocean baths, surf clubs, heritage halls and a lake bigger than Sydney Harbour, all within half an hour. This is where the venues are, which suit which kind of day, when the light is best and what to know about booking beaches and parks.

The city and the East End

Newcastle's centre is full of grand old buildings: City Hall, Customs House, The Newcastle Club and Longworth House, plus pubs and hotels a short walk from the harbour. The East End runs down to Nobbys, Fort Scratchley and the ocean baths, so you can marry in the city and be on the beach for portraits in minutes.

Surf, sandstone and ocean pools

Merewether and the southern beaches

South of the city, Bar Beach, Dixon Park and Merewether form one long arc of sand, with Merewether's ocean baths at the end and the wild Glenrock coast beyond. The surf clubs and Merewether Surfhouse sit right on the beach, and Hickson Street Lookout is one of the city's most beautiful clifftop ceremony spots.

Sailing clubs, jetties and sunsets over the water

Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is huge, calm and only 20 minutes from the city. Its sailing clubs, foreshore reserves and resorts face the water, and from the eastern shore at Belmont the sun sets across the lake, which makes for beautiful golden-hour photos.

Redhead, Swansea and Caves Beach

Further south, Redhead's long beach, the Swansea channel and the sea caves at Caves Beach give you lake and ocean in one place. Plan Caves Beach portraits around the tide.

Choose by style

When to marry

March to May

Autumn

Warm water, settled weather and calmer afternoons. It is the most popular time for beach and lake weddings, and daylight saving ends in early April, so sunset suddenly comes an hour earlier.

Sunset about 7.15pm in early March, 5pm by late May

June to August

Winter

Clear, crisp days and soft light, with whales passing offshore on their migration. Dates are easier to get. Plan an earlier ceremony so you have light for portraits.

Sunset about 5pm

September to November

Spring

Jacarandas in late October and November and longer evenings once daylight saving starts. The coast can be windy, so keep a sheltered spot for the ceremony.

Sunset about 5.45pm in September, 7.40pm by late November

December to February

Summer

Long evenings, warm nights and a north-easterly sea breeze most afternoons. Beaches are busy on weekends, so book council spaces early and choose a room with air conditioning.

Light and timing

Start your ceremony about three hours before sunset. That leaves time for the ceremony, family photos and canapés, then 20 minutes with us for portraits in the best light.

Newcastle's ocean beaches face east, so the sun sets behind the land and we look for the soft pink glow on the water. On Lake Macquarie's eastern shore it is the opposite: the sun sets across the lake for golden reflections. We plan your timeline around your venue's view.

Getting there and getting around

By car: Newcastle is about two hours from Sydney on the M1 and about 45 minutes from the Hunter Valley. Lake Macquarie venues are 20 to 40 minutes south of the city.

By plane: Newcastle Airport at Williamtown is about 25 minutes from the city.

On the day: the light rail runs through the city to the East End. Beach parking fills up on summer weekends, so a shuttle for guests helps.

Beach and park permits

Ceremonies on City of Newcastle beaches, ocean baths and parks need council approval or an event licence, and receptions aren't allowed in open spaces. Lake Macquarie City Council takes online applications for ceremonies in its parks. Hickson Street Lookout is booked through NSW National Parks. Book early: popular spots allow one wedding a day.

Where your guests stay

The city has hotels and apartments within walking distance of the beaches and the East End, including Noah's on the Beach and the Novotel. For Lake Macquarie and Caves Beach weddings, Caves Coastal and Rafferty's have rooms on site. Send accommodation details with your save-the-dates.

If it rains

Coastal showers often pass quickly. Ask your venue where the wet-weather ceremony goes before you book. Surf clubs, heritage halls and glass-fronted rooms all photograph beautifully, and a moody, grey ocean makes dramatic portraits.

Newcastle wedding FAQs

Do you photograph weddings in Newcastle?

Yes, often. We photograph and film weddings across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, from Merewether and the East End to Belmont, Swansea and Caves Beach. See the venues we know above.

Can we get married on the beach in Newcastle?

Yes, with approval. City of Newcastle beaches and ocean baths need council approval or an event licence, and receptions aren't allowed on the sand, so pair a beach ceremony with a venue nearby.

What is the best month for a Newcastle wedding?

March to May for warm water and settled weather, and October and November for spring. Winter is quieter, with clear light and whales offshore.

Which Newcastle venues are right on the beach?

Merewether Surfhouse, Noah's on the Beach, Dixon Park Surf Club, Caves Coastal and Redhead Surf Club are some of our favourites. See the beach list above.

How much does a Newcastle wedding photographer cost?

Our wedding photography starts at $1,999, and photo + film collections start at $4,999. See our Newcastle wedding photography page for packages.

What time should our ceremony start?

About three hours before sunset: around 2pm in winter and 4.30 to 5pm in summer, so you have golden-hour light for portraits.

Venue details checked October 2026. Always confirm with the venue.
