Why we love Merewether Surfhouse
Few Newcastle wedding venues capture the coast quite like Merewether Surfhouse. Overlooking one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, this modern space offers floor-to-ceiling windows, natural light, and sweeping ocean views. As photographers, we love how seamlessly it blends a sophisticated reception setting with the raw beauty of the beach below. Sunset portraits here are always spectacular — glowing skies, golden sand, and that endless horizon.
About Merewether Surfhouse
Merewether Surfhouse sits on Henderson Parade, right on Merewether Beach in Newcastle. The building is modern and glass-fronted, and the function level looks straight out over the surf. Merewether’s ocean baths are just along the beach, which makes for an easy portrait stop. Jasmin & Jye’s wedding paired the two.
The function room
Receptions are held in a column-free function room on the second level. It has floor-to-ceiling glass, an ocean-front balcony, a private bar, built-in audiovisual equipment and a moveable dance floor.
Guest numbers vary by listing: roughly 230 to 270 seated and up to about 350 cocktail style. Movable walls can split the room for smaller celebrations, from around 30 to 40 guests.
Ceremony options
The venue’s listings describe its reception space rather than a ceremony space. Ask the events team what they can offer for ceremonies, or plan a ceremony nearby and come back to Surfhouse for the reception.
Photo spots we look for
The beach is right below the venue, so sunset portraits take minutes, not a car trip. We use the sand and the water’s edge for golden-hour photos, the ocean baths for something more graphic, and the balcony for the last light over the water while your guests settle in.
Planning tips
The coast can be windy, so plan hair and veil choices with that in mind and keep a light layer for portraits. Check sunset time for your date and schedule a 20 to 30 minute portrait break around it. The glow off the water is the reason to marry here.
