We photograph weddings all over Sydney, from harbourside houses in Vaucluse and Mosman to estates in the Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains. This is how the city's wedding areas differ, which venues suit which kind of day, when the light is best and what to know about permits, ferries and parking.

Sandstone, water and the city skyline

The harbour and eastern suburbs

Mosman, Vaucluse and Watsons Bay hold Sydney's most famous harbour venues: heritage houses in their own grounds, old military buildings above the water and hotels on the bay. Many sit inside Sydney Harbour National Park, with bush tracks and beaches right below.

The views come at a price: parking is tight and roads are narrow, so plan transport, and book early for spring and autumn Saturdays.

Wharves, ballrooms and gardens in the middle of it all

The city and inner west

From Walsh Bay and Pyrmont to the Botanic Garden, the city venues are about scale and spectacle: heritage wharves, harbour ballrooms and a grand dining room inside the QVB. Further out, Alexandria and Lilyfield add garden and waterfront venues in the inner west.

City weddings suit guests travelling in, with hotels, trains and ferries close by.

Ocean, headlands and Pittwater

Manly and the Northern Beaches

From Manly Cove and North Head up to Palm Beach and Pittwater, the Northern Beaches feel like a coastal holiday half an hour from the city. Expect harbour beaches, ocean clifftops and quiet waterfront lawns on Pittwater.

The ferry to Manly makes a lovely arrival. Further north, allow for the drive up the peninsula, which can be slow on summer weekends.

Heritage mansions and leafy suburbs

The north and north-west

Around Ryde, Marsfield and Epping, the venues are grand houses in their own gardens and big function rooms close to home for many Sydney families. Curzon Hall is the best known, with sandstone, gardens and rooms for every size of wedding.

Lakes, river flats and room to spread out

The Hawkesbury and western Sydney

Head north-west to Windsor and North Richmond and Sydney turns into farmland and river country, about an hour from the city. Further south-west, Penrith and Mulgoa sit at the foot of the Blue Mountains, with lakes and open sky. Venues here have space, lawns and often lower prices than the harbour.

Country estates and big celebrations

The south-west and Macarthur

Around Liverpool, Bankstown, Denham Court and Camden you find two kinds of wedding: grand ballrooms for big family celebrations, and country estates with lakes, gardens and historic homesteads. Gledswood dates from around 1810.

Valleys, mist and cool-climate gardens

The Blue Mountains

About two hours west of the city, Leura, Katoomba and Hartley Vale give you escarpments, gardens and a weekend away. It is cooler than the coast, and winter can bring mist or even snow, which makes beautiful, moody photos.

Most guests will stay over, so think of it as a destination wedding.

When to marry

March to May

Autumn

Settled weather, warm water and mild evenings, which is why autumn is so popular for harbour and beach weddings. Daylight saving ends in early April, so sunset suddenly comes an hour earlier. Book early.

Sunset about 7.15pm in early March, 5pm by late May

June to August

Winter

Clear, crisp days and the softest light of the year, with dates easier to get and venues often cheaper. In the Blue Mountains, expect real cold, mist and log fires. Plan an earlier ceremony so you have light for portraits.

Sunset about 5pm

September to November

Spring

Gardens in full bloom and, from late October, jacaranda trees turning streets purple. September can be windy on the harbour, so keep a sheltered spot for the ceremony. Daylight saving starts in early October.

Sunset about 5.45pm in September, 7.45pm by late November

December to February

Summer

Long evenings and warm nights by the water, with humid afternoons and the odd storm. Harbour venues book out around Christmas and New Year. Choose shade for the ceremony and a room with air conditioning.

Light and timing

The best portrait light is the last hour before sunset. As a guide, start your ceremony about three hours before sunset, which leaves time for the ceremony, family photos and canapés, then 20 minutes with us for portraits while the light is at its best.

Which way your venue faces matters in Sydney. From the eastern suburbs and Mosman, the sun sets over the city, which is perfect for skyline silhouettes. On the ocean beaches the sun sets behind the land, so we look for the soft pink glow on the water instead. We check every venue's view when we plan your timeline.

Getting there and getting around

Traffic: allow more time than you think, especially on Friday and Saturday afternoons, around the harbour bridges and up the Northern Beaches. Build buffers into your timeline between getting ready, the ceremony and the reception.

Ferries: Manly, Watsons Bay, Taronga and Walsh Bay are all on the ferry network, which makes a beautiful arrival for guests.

Parking: harbour venues often have little or none. A coach or shuttle for guests saves a lot of stress.

From Newcastle and the Hunter: the city is about two hours down the M1, and the Blue Mountains about two and a half.

Permits and public spaces

Many of Sydney's most beautiful spots are public land. National Parks venues (such as Athol Hall and Strickland Estate), the Royal Botanic Garden and council beaches and parks have their own booking rules, fees and photography permits. Some premium sites include a permit for photos around the grounds. Ask your venue what is included, and check before planning portraits somewhere else.

Where your guests stay

For city and harbour weddings, guests can stay in CBD hotels and travel in by ferry or rideshare. Hotel venues such as Pier One, Watsons Bay and the Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley have rooms on site. For the Northern Beaches, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains, most guests will want to stay locally, so send accommodation details with your save-the-dates.

If it rains

Sydney showers often pass quickly. Ask every venue where the wet-weather ceremony goes before you book: verandahs, glasshouses, marquees and heritage halls all photograph beautifully, and an overcast harbour gives soft, even light for portraits.

Sydney wedding FAQs

Do you photograph weddings in Sydney?

Yes. We photograph and film weddings right across Sydney, from the harbour and Northern Beaches to the Hawkesbury, Macarthur and the Blue Mountains. See the venues we know above.

What is the best month for a Sydney wedding?

March to May for settled weather and warm water, and October and November for spring gardens and jacarandas. They are the most popular months, so book early. Winter is quieter and often cheaper, with beautiful clear light.

Do we need a permit for photos in parks and gardens?

Often, yes. National Parks venues, the Royal Botanic Garden and many council parks and beaches need a booking or photography permit. Your venue can usually tell you what is included.

Which Sydney venues have harbour views?

Vaucluse House, Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel, Gunners' Barracks, Sergeants' Mess, Taronga Zoo, Athol Hall, Pier One and the Pyrmont wharves are some of our favourites. See the harbour views list above.

How much does a Sydney wedding photographer cost?

Our wedding photography starts at $1,999, and photo + film collections start at $4,999. See our Sydney wedding photography page for packages.

What time should our ceremony start?

About three hours before sunset: around 2pm in winter and 4.30 to 5pm in summer. That gives you the ceremony, family photos, canapés and golden-hour portraits without rushing.

Venue details checked October 2026. Always confirm with the venue.
