Tanilba House weddings: a photographer’s guide

Tanilba Bay · Port Stephens

Why we love Tanilba House

Historic, coastal, and endlessly charming, Tanilba House is one of Port Stephens’ true treasures. Built in the 1830s, this sandstone homestead carries a sense of history that adds depth to every moment. We love capturing couples here because the textures are incredible — weathered stone, sprawling fig trees, and gardens that feel alive with stories. Against the backdrop of the bay, it’s a venue that gives your wedding day both grandeur and intimacy.

About Tanilba House

Tanilba House is a heritage-listed 1831 house on the bay at Tanilba Bay, Port Stephens. It holds only about 25 weddings a year, so each one gets real care.

Ceremony and reception

  • A 30-metre stone arbour covered in vines, flowers and fairy lights.
  • A fig tree “cathedral” formed by the boughs of two 160-year-old fig trees.
  • A stone “Temple” and a large all-weather conservatory.

The grounds suit up to about 90 guests. There are packages for intimate weddings of under 50, elopement-style garden weddings and venue-only hire. Alcohol must be served by RSA staff and food comes from approved suppliers.

Photo spots we look for

The arbour, the fig trees and the sandstone are all made for portraits, and the waterfront is about 100 metres away for sunset photos.
