Plated meals keep the night on time; shared plates feel generous; food trucks suit casual weddings but take longer to serve. Check drinks rules with your venue, and feed your suppliers.

Lesson notes

Food, drinks and the cake

Stage eight is the reception. Let's start with what everyone remembers: the food.

Plated, shared or trucks

A plated meal keeps everyone seated and on time. Shared plates feel relaxed and generous. Food trucks and grazing tables suit casual weddings, but take longer to serve a big crowd.

Check your venue's rules

For drinks, check what your venue allows. Some offer packages, some let you bring your own with licensed bar staff.

Cake, and your crew

Two things are easy to forget. Ask whether your venue charges to cut and serve the cake. And make sure your suppliers get a meal. A fed photographer is a happy photographer.
